Healthy Bagels!

Healthy Bagels

Who doesn't love a good bagel? I for one love bagels but they are definitely a weekend brunch treat. Most people don't think to make their own bagels because it sounds a bit scary, trust me you can do it! I wanted to see how easy it was to make my own bagels and add a healthy twist. This bagel recipe only has 5 ingredients and is extremely easy to make, even if you're not the best cook trust me you can make these bagels. Let's get into the recipe!

To prepare this recipe, you’ll need a few kitchen items. Gather the following before you start:

  • Large bowl

  • Fork

  • Measuring cups

  • Damp towel

  • Clean floured surface

  • Knife

  • Baking sheet

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of flour (I used wholemeal flour but feel free to use whatever you have in the cupboard).

  • 1 Tablespoon of baking powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt

  • 1 cup of greek yoghurt

  • 1 egg for egg wash

  • Bagel seasoning (any seasoning of your choice)

Method:

1) Start by preheating your oven to 250 degrees. Get out a bowl and add your flour, salt and baking powder to a mixing bowl. Mix the dry ingredients together with a fork until they are well mixed in.

2) Add your greek yoghurt to the dry mixture. Mix this all together until it starts to form a dough.

3) Once you have formed your dough leave it in the bowl and cover with a damp tea towel for 10 minutes.

4) After your timer goes off flour your bench and put some flour on your hands so the dough doesn't stick. Kneed your dough until it isn't sticky.

5) Cut your ball of dough into four equal parts.

6) Roll each section into balls.

7) Using your finger, poke a hole in the centre of the ball and start to form a bagel shape by spinning your finger clockwise. Repeat this process.

8) Add bagels to a non-stick baking sheet and brush with egg wash.

9) Sprinkle with whatever seasoning you like. If we had everything but the bagel seasoning in New Zealand I would have used that!

10) Bake at 250 degrees for 25 minutes. They may take longer so keep an eye on them!
