The importance of a skincare routine

Having a skincare routine in the mornings and in the evenings is extremely important when it comes to feeling your best! Earlier this year my skin when through a huge breakout and I spent ages perfecting what products to use to help my skin get back to normal. My face had a new pimple each day and honestly, it just hurt. I like to wear make-up every day so it's important to me that I take care of my skin and remove makeup properly at the end of the day. In this post I don't want to focus too much on the products you should use as we all have different skin types, I want to highlight the importance of taking care of your skin and how to find what works for you.

Why skincare is important:

  • It helps your skin stay in good condition: We naturally shed skin cells during the day, so it’s important to keep your skin revitalised. Having an effective skin routine can help prevent acne, treat wrinkles, and help keep your skin glowing.

  • Help keep skin youthful: As we age our skin cells age with us so it's important to use products that can help our body replace dead skin cells.

  • Your self-confidence will get a boost: When your skin looks better, you’ll feel better about yourself and so you have more confidence which is so important! I know when my skin is bad I feel horrible and it impacts my entire mood.

What are some good skincare methods?

It has taken me years to figure out a good skincare routine, I am still in the process of finding what works for me. I did some research and the following methods can help keep your skin glowing.

  • Cleanser: Washing your face gently with a product that is made for the purpose of cleaning your face is extremely important. You want to find a cleanser for daily use as it is not recommended to use an exfoliator every day as this is more likely to harm your skin. According to Skin Topia If you have dry skin, choose a cleanser that doesn’t have alcohol. On the other hand, if you have oily skin then look for a cleanser with the label oil-free. Most websites and videos I have watched recommended rinsing your face with warm water, not cold water.

  • Toner: You want to use a toner after washing your face. The purpose of a toner is to smooth and restore your skin's nutrients. Toner basically acts as a protective barrier after cleansing as cleansing strips your skin of nutrients.

  • Moisturiser: Moisturisers should be used every time you wash your face regardless of your skin type. However, do some research to find which is the best moisturiser for your skin type.

  • Exfoliator: Exfoliators are optional, I personally like to use them occasionally around once or twice a week. Exfoliants can help reduce skin build-up and can impact the texture of your skin, however, it is really important not to overdo it as it can have the reverse effect and strip your skin of what it needs.

  • Serum: If you want to take your skin care to the next level you can look to add a serum to your routine. A serum is used to help address specific skin issues for example redness.

  • Face masks: I love a good face mask for self-care Sunday! The one I am posing with in the image below is called Rose from Lush. This product is completely vegan and leaves your skin feeling smooth and fresh. This mask acts as a toner so only do it occasionally as you won't need to use all of the other products you normally would in your skincare routine.

Just like anything, consistency is the key to having nice skin, be patient and ask a professional what products are best for your skin. What does your skincare routine currently look like? Leave a comment and let me know your thoughts.
